3 years was perhaps a long hiatus that kept STR fans so much disappointed and they desperately wanted a release of their star. This indeed had created more hype for his comeback film ‘Vaalu’ directed by debutant Vijay Chander and produced by Nic Arts. First and foremost, there are certain things that has to be clarified before getting to watch this film or reviewing. The film was bound to unexpected hyper promotions scenario due to various reasons that we have been witnessing in the past few weeks. But while watching this film, it indirectly creates an assumption of elevating the expectation bars and suddenly dropping it downside. This is the problem with those who don’t feel the film is worth watching up for.

Vaalu is a romantic comedy that is predictable in parts and the makers are clear with their motto. A complete entertainer for all STR fans and henceforth analyzing this film with more score points isn’t so much worth it.

Silambarasan as known to everyone is an entertainer and he has completely done what will make his fans so much excited. Apparently this should have been evident while watching the film in theatres that keeps everyone, especially STR fans enthralled for the first 20 minutes. Guess what? For the ones outside STR fan zone or common audiences, they might keep waiting for something to happen, in other words, a proper story to arrive soon, which doesn’t happen.

In fact the film doesn’t have a substantial plot as well. It’s a simple romantic comedy entertainer that involves a devil may care ‘Vaalu’ boy well pampered by his parents and loveable sister. He isn’t looking forward to join a job and is seen all the time shooting breeze with beer and cigarettes with his friends (Santhanam and VTV Ganesh). This is when he falls in love at first sight with Hansika Motwani. Unexpectedly, she happens to have been already arranged by her father to marry the cousin boy (newcomer Aditya), who is a loan shark with ethical values. What unfolds next has been narrated in a way that will entertain Simbhu fans.

As mentioned earlier, the film doesn’t have anything special to offer in terms of story or narration. You go easily predicting what’s gonna happen next. When it comes to performance, STR has undergone some change, where he maintains a low tone even while uttering punch dialogues, which makes him more loveable on the screens. You can precisely spot the change in his dancing skills as well, where he imitates himself in Manmadhan style and just see how he has changed his dancing pattern. In the same way, his mannerisms and dialogue deliveries have been slightly enhanced than his previous movies. Hansika Motwani in contrast has nothing special to mention about. Santhanam’s comedy lines and his episodes with Silambarasan and VTV Ganesh are good and rib-tickling. Aadukalam Narain plays his role very well and his emotional touch of father sentiments keeps winning appreciations in theatres. Newcomer Aditya appearing as baddie is commendable with his episodes.

Musically, the background score is not up to the mark and Thaman does favour for STR fans in couple of places. The music director can attempt something more efficient stepping out of ‘Telugu Masala’ Zone.

On the flip side, the film doesn’t carry a proper story even till the end. It’s a hackneyed story that doesn’t have anything surprising or exciting.

All that you can say is ‘Vaalu’ attempts to satisfy and make the STR fans invigorated who missed him a lot for three years.

Verdict: Entertainment and celebrations for STR fans

Rating: 2.5/5

Movie : Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga
Directed by : M. Rajesh
Produced by : Arya, Prasad V Potluri
Written by : M. Rajesh
Starring : Arya, Tamannaah, Santhanam, Bhanu, Karunakaran, Vidyu Raman
Music by : D. Imman
Cinematography : Nirav Shah
Edited by : Vivek Harshan
Production Company : The Show People, PVP cinema
Lyricist : Na. Muthukumar

Filmmaker Rajesh is synonymous for his comedy entertainer and had consistently delivered some commendable comedy entertainers that still remain to be excellent time pass flicks. The films like Siva Manasula Sakthi, Boss Engira Baskaran and Oru Kal Oru Kannadi. His fourth film All in All Azhagu Raja wasn’t a good hit, but this time he has tried all his best with a comeback effort in Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga. With this one turning to be Arya’s 25th film, the film is produced by his home banner of The Show People. As in all Rajesh movies, Santhanam appears as the other hero with Tamannaah and Bhanu playing the female lead character.

The film opens with Arya and Santhanam going for a fasting protest with the issue against girlfriends and wives who torture their husbands to give up their friendships. Arya and Santhanam have their own reasons to do this and they are revealed through flashbacks as it happens in all the movies of Rajesh.

To start off with, Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga is something that belongs to a complete entertainer genre. The film doesn’t need an analysis indeed and there isn’t anything much to delineate on this. It’s a clean entertainer that keeps audiences in fun and enjoyment though the pattern is same as Rajesh’s previous movies. The director’s previous movies like Boss Engira Baskaran and Oru Kal Oru Kannadi had a similar paradigm of flashback as the major backdrop and the complete story is revealed in the flashback.  One of the major highlights in this film is the time pass elements that are added as ingredients. The best scenes – if you are actually looking up, it cannot be mentioned as instances, but you will enjoy as you watch it. The film has a running length nearly more than 2 hours, but it never seems like the time has passed.

All the actors have done what is required for this roles and their performance is so genuine though nothing beyond appreciable to boast about. Musical score by Imman is okay and couple of songs like Lucka Maatikuchu and Subscriber is good.

On the minus aspect, there isn’t anything bigger to look up for the story and it reminds us of many instances from the previous movies of Rajesh.

Overall, Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga is a middling entertainer that can be watched if you’re precisely looking up for something entertaining to kill your time.

Verdict: Entertaining and rib tickling in parts

‘Thirudu, Poi Sollu, Desathi Kaapathu’. This tagline of ‘Vandha Mala‘, coupled with its innovative promotions, created enough curiosity about the film. Does the end-product live up to expectations? Let’s check out.

Four youngsters who spend all their time doing nothing but drinking booze. There is a girl in their lives. They encounter a trouble and are forced to help a woman. Did they take up the challenge or not form the crux.

Directed by Igore, who made ‘Kalaba Kadhalan‘, ‘Vandha Mala’ is a loud and a messy affair.

Though the artistes predominantly newcomers have tried to give their best, a weak screenplay mars the show.

Produced by Jayaradhakrishnan and Navakumaran, the movie revolves around four youngsters, Tamil, Udhayaraj, Hitler and Prasad. For them everything under the sun is fun.

They snatch gold chains and spend a jolly life. There is Sri Priyanka who falls for Udhayaraj. There are enough double meaning dialogues in the first half.

These boys who have nothing to hold on in their lives are entrusted with a huge responsibility. Did they accomplish the task entrusted to them or not forms the climax.

Udhayaraj does his best, while the rest of the boys are okay. Mahanadhi Shankar and Vietnam Veedu Sundaram are also in the cast. However Sri Pyanka steals the show with a casual performance.

Music by Sam D Raj and a couple of songs sound good. The other credits are A L Ramesh (editing) and Vijayakumar Thondaiman (art director) and Knife Naren (stunts).

Igore has tried to come out with a local film and succeeds in parts.

Selvandhan

To start off with, Mahesh Babu’s Selvandhan, originally titled as ‘Srimanthudu’ in Telugu happens to be an out and out commercial entertainer laced with a prototyped formulae of what we have been witnessing in Tollywood over the years. Filmmaker Koratala Siva has interwoven the screenplay with intriguing elements like action, thriller, romance and emotions with a social issue in the backdrop. But what makes the film engaged is something we have to find out in the analysis.

Mahesh Babu happens to be the one and only son of Jagapathi Babu, who happens to be one of the most richest tycoons in the country. Unlike his family, Mahesh Babu loves simplicity and doesn’t want to take up his father’s business but choose something different in his life. On an occasion, he comes across a beautiful good looking girl (Shruthi Haasan) and falls in love with her. Eventually, she starts reciprocating and later is devastated by the truth of his real identity. Sooner, Mahesh Babu sets out to her village that is suffering from severe crisis of roughnecks dominating the land looting away every resource and torturing innocent people there. This will change the entire situation with a past that indirectly links his father Jagapathi Babu as well.

Getting on with the analysis, the film gets a complete treatment of commercial package. We have seen it performed by many heroes in the past and the screenplay is nowhere different. But the screen presence of Mahesh Babu, his enchanting mannerisms and appearance is what makes it unparalleled. The scene where he proposes Shruthi Haasan and his reaction towards her outburst of rejecting him is perfect. Not to miss the action sequence in the party and all credit goes to his style and Anal Arasu’s stylish choreography. Even the toughest punch dialogues are very well delivered by him. Shruthi Haasan unlike many other movies doesn’t appear only for the sake of skin shows, but has a substantial character. Jagapathi Babu after a long time gets a meaty role. Rajendra Prasad is excellent. Sitara, Sukanya, Rahul and many others in the cast have done what is required for the script.

DSP – Devi Sri Prasad has composed the tunes that look appropriate for Mahesh Babu. The songs are very well responded in the theatres and background score could have been better though. The greatest value for this film is cinematography by Mathie.

If you’re looking up for the flip side, there are slight minuses that are the slow paced narration in the second half. Although the entire film is predictable in parts, the first half moves with lively moments, but post-intermission sequences could have been done in a better way.

Overall, Selvandhan aka Srimanthudu occurs to be a full-fledged commercial entertainer that can be enjoyed by all the family audiences.

Verdict: 100% Paisa Vasool Movie

Rating: 2.75/5

Chandi Veeran

Chandi Veeran

Sargunam films have been always the closest synonyms to village based entertainers. He has showcased some unique backdrops laced with comedy and drama. His first film ‘Kalavani’ was a surprise hit followed by critically acclaimed ‘Vaagai Sooda Vaa’. Disappointingly, his very next outing ‘Naiyaandi’ didn’t perform well in box office. This time, he tries to blend action and comedy together in this fourth outing titled ‘Chandi Veeran’ that stars Atharvaa and Anandhi in lead roles.

The film focuses on a water crisis between two villages that puts them on severe confrontation. Having worked in Singapore and getting back to his respective native village, Atharvaa tries to sort out the issue unknowing that his own life is at stake. He is madly in love with Anandhi, who happens to the daughter of Rice Mill Owner (Lal), but sooner it becomes a major conflict. Things proceed with a much serious and complicated scenario followed by an unexpected humour dashing through the way.

Atharvaa’s magnum opus Paradesi has been winning him the incredible praises relentlessly and till today, he is heavily praised for this magnum opus. Unfortunately to the disappointments, his next film ‘Irumbu Kuthirai’ was a pathetic flop. Coming after a yearlong interval, he has chosen a script that would gain some reception from the rural audiences. Yes, we appreciate his performance, but at a point of time, we feel Atharvaa is worthy of performing something greater beyond our expectations. He has nothing much to perform, but has done what is required to the script and his characterisation. Anandhi performed a prowess spell in ‘Kayal’, but immediately stepping into a normal commercial role is something not appreciable. She is nothing but a replication of what Oviya had performed in the film ‘Kalavani’. Director-actor Lal has done a fabulous job and his flawless performance becomes the major backbone of this film.

Sargunam films always have some good songs irrespective of who the composer is. But this time, it is not so much appealing although Sabesh-Murali have tried embellishing it on their own efforts. Cinematography is beautifully done and the exotic locales are very well canned.

The first half rarely touches the basic plot of this film and by the time, we are introduced to the major issue, it’s already late and even the second half with unwanted song sequence hampers the progression. The major problem with the film is that the there is a confusion while watching the film whether it’s a comedy entertainer or action thriller.

Finally, the director reveals the genre by end of this show, which might not be apt for the film’s title indeed, but somehow it might engage the rural and suburban audiences.

Verdict: Somewhat middling with average entertainment

Rating: 2.25/5

Puli

Puli

Ilayathalapathy Vijay fans have been constantly waiting for this moment to celebrate the musical emergence of ‘Puli’, which happened recently. The film is directed by Chimbu Devan and is produced by Thameems and P.T. Selvakumar with Hansika Motwani and Shruthi Haasan playing the female lead roles opposite Vijay. Devi Sri Prasad has composed music for this album and he is teaming up with Vijay after the success of ‘Sachin’ and ‘Villu’.

Yaendi Yaendi

Singers: Vijay and Shruti Haasan

No words! The song captivates our senses from the first time we hear it. The single track promo that was unveiled before a week prior to the audio launch made it more enhancing. The well tuned note by DSP, which is completely different from his usual style is an additional highlight. The vocalising style by Vijay and Shruthi Haasan are completely amusing.

Sottavaala

Singers: Shankar Mahadevan and MM Manasi

As it happens in many songs composed by Devi Sri Prasad, the sound and noise eclipses the voices of Shankar Mahadevan and MM Manasi. Perhaps, there are chances for the song to take a upshot during the release of visuals.

Mannavanae Mannavanae

Singers: Sooraj Santhosh, MLR Karthikeyan, Chinmayi and Anitha

The percussions become the major strength in this film with the singers like Sooraj Santhosh, MLR Karthikeyan, Chinmayi and Anitha make the song sound at its best of their efficient efforts. The song has been carrying forth an immense sound, but again at some points gets too noisy. Yet again, the splendiferous visuals by Natty would be adding some additional strength to this film and for the songs as well.

Jingiliya

Singers: Javed Ali and Pooja AV

As the title of this song suggests, it’s a tribal song that gains some momentum with the beats and it looks like this is pictured on Vijay and Shruthi Haasan. As mentioned in some of the above songs, this would be making its way to a greater appreciation when heard with the visuals.

Puli

Singers: Mano and Priyadarshini

Sometimes, the lyrics and composing would be finely done, but it would gradually lose its prominence, when there is a lack of synch. Such is the impact of Puli song that is rendered by Mano and Priyadarshini.

Manidha Manidha

Singer: Tippu

As the album comes to an end, the track ‘Manidha Manidha’ stands out to be a perfect track that sounds more inspiring and emotionally bonding. It will surely make the listeners more adherent and the visuals will bring some additional strength.

On the whole, Puli songs are completely composed in favour of Vijay fans and they will surely rejoice over this composition from Devi Sri Prasad. But when analysed critically, it’s ‘Yaendi Yaendi’ and ‘Manidha Manidha’ that favours our interests instantly and others might take some time to brew up.

Verdict: Well tailored album for Ilayathalapathy fans
