Sargunam films have been always the closest synonyms to village based entertainers. He has showcased some unique backdrops laced with comedy and drama. His first film ‘Kalavani’ was a surprise hit followed by critically acclaimed ‘Vaagai Sooda Vaa’. Disappointingly, his very next outing ‘Naiyaandi’ didn’t perform well in box office. This time, he tries to blend action and comedy together in this fourth outing titled ‘Chandi Veeran’ that stars Atharvaa and Anandhi in lead roles.

The film focuses on a water crisis between two villages that puts them on severe confrontation. Having worked in Singapore and getting back to his respective native village, Atharvaa tries to sort out the issue unknowing that his own life is at stake. He is madly in love with Anandhi, who happens to the daughter of Rice Mill Owner (Lal), but sooner it becomes a major conflict. Things proceed with a much serious and complicated scenario followed by an unexpected humour dashing through the way.

Atharvaa’s magnum opus Paradesi has been winning him the incredible praises relentlessly and till today, he is heavily praised for this magnum opus. Unfortunately to the disappointments, his next film ‘Irumbu Kuthirai’ was a pathetic flop. Coming after a yearlong interval, he has chosen a script that would gain some reception from the rural audiences. Yes, we appreciate his performance, but at a point of time, we feel Atharvaa is worthy of performing something greater beyond our expectations. He has nothing much to perform, but has done what is required to the script and his characterisation. Anandhi performed a prowess spell in ‘Kayal’, but immediately stepping into a normal commercial role is something not appreciable. She is nothing but a replication of what Oviya had performed in the film ‘Kalavani’. Director-actor Lal has done a fabulous job and his flawless performance becomes the major backbone of this film.

Sargunam films always have some good songs irrespective of who the composer is. But this time, it is not so much appealing although Sabesh-Murali have tried embellishing it on their own efforts. Cinematography is beautifully done and the exotic locales are very well canned.

The first half rarely touches the basic plot of this film and by the time, we are introduced to the major issue, it’s already late and even the second half with unwanted song sequence hampers the progression. The major problem with the film is that the there is a confusion while watching the film whether it’s a comedy entertainer or action thriller.

Finally, the director reveals the genre by end of this show, which might not be apt for the film’s title indeed, but somehow it might engage the rural and suburban audiences.

Verdict: Somewhat middling with average entertainment

Ilayathalapathy Vijay fans have been constantly waiting for this moment to celebrate the musical emergence of ‘Puli’, which happened recently. The film is directed by Chimbu Devan and is produced by Thameems and P.T. Selvakumar with Hansika Motwani and Shruthi Haasan playing the female lead roles opposite Vijay. Devi Sri Prasad has composed music for this album and he is teaming up with Vijay after the success of ‘Sachin’ and ‘Villu’.

Yaendi Yaendi

Singers: Vijay and Shruti Haasan

No words! The song captivates our senses from the first time we hear it. The single track promo that was unveiled before a week prior to the audio launch made it more enhancing. The well tuned note by DSP, which is completely different from his usual style is an additional highlight. The vocalising style by Vijay and Shruthi Haasan are completely amusing.

Sottavaala

Singers: Shankar Mahadevan and MM Manasi

As it happens in many songs composed by Devi Sri Prasad, the sound and noise eclipses the voices of Shankar Mahadevan and MM Manasi. Perhaps, there are chances for the song to take a upshot during the release of visuals.

Mannavanae Mannavanae

Singers: Sooraj Santhosh, MLR Karthikeyan, Chinmayi and Anitha

The percussions become the major strength in this film with the singers like Sooraj Santhosh, MLR Karthikeyan, Chinmayi and Anitha make the song sound at its best of their efficient efforts. The song has been carrying forth an immense sound, but again at some points gets too noisy. Yet again, the splendiferous visuals by Natty would be adding some additional strength to this film and for the songs as well.

Jingiliya

Singers: Javed Ali and Pooja AV

As the title of this song suggests, it’s a tribal song that gains some momentum with the beats and it looks like this is pictured on Vijay and Shruthi Haasan. As mentioned in some of the above songs, this would be making its way to a greater appreciation when heard with the visuals.

Puli

Singers: Mano and Priyadarshini

Sometimes, the lyrics and composing would be finely done, but it would gradually lose its prominence, when there is a lack of synch. Such is the impact of Puli song that is rendered by Mano and Priyadarshini.

Manidha Manidha

Singer: Tippu

As the album comes to an end, the track ‘Manidha Manidha’ stands out to be a perfect track that sounds more inspiring and emotionally bonding. It will surely make the listeners more adherent and the visuals will bring some additional strength.

On the whole, Puli songs are completely composed in favour of Vijay fans and they will surely rejoice over this composition from Devi Sri Prasad. But when analysed critically, it’s ‘Yaendi Yaendi’ and ‘Manidha Manidha’ that favours our interests instantly and others might take some time to brew up.

Verdict: Well tailored album for Ilayathalapathy fans

Paayum Puli

Following the good success of Pandiya Naadu, the entire team is coming back for ‘Paayum Puli’, which stars Vishal and Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles and is directed by Suseenthiran with Vendhar Movies S Madhan Producing it. D. Imman has composed music to the lyrical lines of Vairamuthu.

Silukku Marame

Singers: Divya Kumar and Shashaa Thirupathi

 The song doesn’t need any introduction for since it was launched as single track, it had a good response. The composing style by D Imman and the lyrical lines by Vairamuthu that encompasses good essence becomes a major highlight. The making has indeed added up more intensity. The singers have made an enchanting spell to keep us engaged.

Puli Puli Paayum Puli

Singer: Malgudi Subha

 Malgudi Subha is always known for some best numbers and her vocalising style has been a pillar for many songs. This time, she brings forth an appealing attempt, but the overall composing of the song is just average and it could have been better if Imman had made it more pumping for the senses.

Yaar Indha Muyalkutty

Singer: Armaan Maalik

Armaan Maalik tries everything to give the best from his part with a decorous rendition, but the instrumental part and the on whole composing by Imman much alike the previous number doesn’t occupy our scope of interest.

Marudakkari

Singer: Diwakar

Diwakar from the times, he was featured in reality singer show has been capturing our interests where he enjoys every bit of song he croons. Apparently, his playback singing has been comparatively gaining good reception and he is now on the winning spree. Although, this song is a bit of mediocre, the singing style of  Diwakar is pretty awesome.

Naa Soodani Mogini

Singer: Jyoti Nooran

As the album comes to end, the song is deliberately a forced in song for the sake of commercial gratification, which doesn’t bring us any sort of gratification.

On totting up the final mark of verdict for ‘Paayum Puli’, the album has only catchy number ‘Silukku Marame’ and rest of the tracks are merely ordinary ones.

Verdict: Above average, not great as Pandiya Nadu

Yatchan

Vishnuvardhan and Yuvan Shankar Raja – whenever, we utter these brands, they eventually gain up our complete attention for they at least give us a couple of Chartbusters we can relish upon. Apparently, this time with Yatchan, Yuvan Shankar Raja has made a stunning comeback with the album making beautiful songs.

Parapara

Singers: Ranjith and Vijay Yesudas

It’s an abrupt start and the first song itself has its carved niche with beautiful composition with a mix of best sound and intonations by Ranjith and Vijay Yesudas. Both Ranjith and Vijay Yesudas offer the best renditions and the interludes are very well done. 

Konjaalai

Voices: Yuvan Shankar Raja and Tanvi Shah

It’s been a long time, we happened to hear a mellifluous treat from Yuvan Shankar Raja and now he gratifies our senses with a beautiful rendition. Tanvi Shah on her part makes an appealing effort. The instrumental parts are very well executed with more elegance.

Kaakaponnu

Vocals: Anthony Dasan, Priyadarshini and Yuvan Shankar Raja

The song is sure to become a stunning treat for all Yuvan Shankar Raja who didn’t have a big Kuthu number from the musical genius. This song brings us a newfangled combination of Hip Hop and Local Gaana style with this ensemble singers Anthony Dasan, Priyadarshan and Yuvan Shankar Raja making it happen together.

 Innum Enna

Vocals: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Composed in Jazzy style, the solo voice of Yuvan Shankar Raja dominated and the clarity of lyrics is very well retained. The song would instantly catch our attention when viewed on the screens for its situational treatment.

Champion

Vocals: Rabbit Mac, Sheezay from Psycho Unit

Every song that has come from this combination has always proved to be a good one and something scintillating. Champion is one such number that engrosses us vividly. Thanks to Psycho Unit for delivering yet another number of Kudos.

Overall, ‘Yatchan’ features some of the best peppy numbers and it can be regarded as the best Chartbuster number from Yuvan Shankar Raja after a very long time. The songs are sure to remain on the top of charts for a very long period of time.

Verdict: Bouncing back time for Yuvan Shankar Raja

Idhu Enna Maayam

As soon the show gets over, you would surely have one thing to claim – Vijay has intentionally touched this genre. He has been a man of experiments who wants to win through every genre of movie he handles, completely different and contrastive from each other. Firstly, the filmmaker deserves such appreciations for being one of the rarest filmmakers aspiring to accomplish with such endeavours.

He never gets confined to one particular zone or never wants to be identified so just like his mentor Priyadarshan, who shifts from period to a crime-thriller, murder-mystery and then a comedy (though they would be an inspired replica of Hollywood flicks sometimes).

Getting on with the synopsis and analysis of Idhu Enna Maayam, the film has some interesting elements in spite of its time-worn script and dull moments.

Vikram Prabhu and Keerthi Suresh have been lovers of the past. They come across each other and there seems to be sparks glowing again.

Vikram Prabhu owns a firm called Unnal Mudiyum Thambi along with friends that involve bringing lovers together with ideas (probably childish). Navdeep arrives into the situation asking him to make beautiful Keerthi Suresh fall for her. Vikram Prabhu is negligent at first because of their past, but later agrees, but past emotions fall into places again.

The story has many references of Neethaane En Ponvasantham, Guru En Aalu, Manmadhan Ambu and many more. This becomes the first ever reason that stops gaining our attention. But Vijay tries to please us with a narration, which again stumbles terribly in many parts. It’s quite saddening to see a filmmaker who has made some appreciable films falling back into the erroneous zone.

Vikram Prabhu’s performance is soulless. He has to be choosy with what he does or else would be lost in the league of crowds. Keerthi Suresh is impressive with her looks and her skills in dance and dubbing in own voice is a good stroke. This is a passable debut for the missy, who has a big league of movies coming in shortly including Sivakarthikeyan’s Rajini Murugan. Others in the cast, though prominent ones like Nasser, Ambika and so on, they lose their scope due to imperfect characterisations and fallible writing.

Musical score by GV Prakash is disappointing in places, but the cinematography by Nirav Shah and editing by Anthony are appreciable with beautiful visuals.

On the whole, Idhu Enna Maayam is a mediocre film that carries fewer emotions in places and from a filmmaker who made some poignant love stories like Madrasapattinam, this is not something we expect from him. But we must appreciate the making style of Vijay and not including any double entendres and thereby making it pleasant though average.

Verdict: Magical moments occur in places
