Following Pannaiyarum Padminiyum and Orange Mittai, Justin Prabhakaran has composed music for Oru Naal Koothu, which is directed by debutant Nelson Venkatesan and produced by J Selvakumar of Kenanya Films.

Sean Roldan of Vaayai Moodi Pesavum and Mundasupatti had rendered voice for ‘Aagayam’ from Madras that earned him decorous reception. He has now crooned this number with brilliance and perfect rendition. Padmalatha gives the best energy into the track and instrumentals during interludes are awe-inspiring.

Patta Padunga Ji

Vocals: Karthick, Padmalatha, Nelson Venkatesan and Veera

Nelson Venkatesan, director of this film has a good track journey in the world of Radio and this film is based on such theme at Radio Station. The song is about fun-filled composing based on the work life at Radio Station and maybe, the visuals would make this song complete.

Yaeli Yaeli

Singers: Sathya Prakash and Shwetha Mohan

Sathya Prakash just leaves us so much spellbound over his inspiringly convincing voice. The composing is so melodious done with mind instrumentals and Shwetha Mohan causes the best and beauteous moments with her rendition. It’s a classic love song that has to be promoted to a greater magnitude, which will indeed help for the film’s additional attraction.

Eppo Varuvaaro

Singer: Haricharan

The song holds dual significance. One that symbolizes a devotee’s for deity of Krishna and then it brings forth an emotional call of a woman waiting for her beloved. What we love about this song is Justin Prabhakaran reduces the instrumentals to best mildness and gives more clarity to Haricharan who could easily intonate any devotional song with best emotional feeling.

On the whole, Oru Naal Koothu brings some best tracks for the music lovers and there are different genres of music, which make it more pleasant. Justin Prabhakaran is definitely a musi director to watch out for.

Verdict: Pleasingly dulcet and more melodious.

It’s a phase of love stories, where audiences are so much engrossed with the horripilating treat. But still few filmmakers offer some poignant love stories and Gitanjali Selvaraghavan’s debut directorial ‘Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ that stars  Editor Kola Bhaskar’s son Bala Krishna Kola and Bollywood actress Wamiqa Gabbi in lead roles with newcomer Amrit composing music.

The album starts with an usual note of a track with love failure that comes from  the drunk heart at a Tasmac shop. Something quite prototyped that we have been constantly seeing on the screens over the years and this one isn’t an exception. Amrit has tried to make it sound good and is somewhat ok.

Mora Saiyya (Yeno Mounam)

The melodious rendition by  Vijay Prakash and Shakthisree Gopalan is worthy of appreciations and Amrit has penned some lines that are so much touching. The song has some popularity for its intriguing elements like preludes and instrumental portions. But it’s the singers who stand out to be prominently showcasing their potentials.

Again, much as we saw in all likelihood with the first track, this one too is based on a  young ordinary boy’s lamentation in a funny manner for not being blessed with a girlfriend. Amrit has crooned the number apart from penning it down with simple lyrics.

The song comes as a sudden surprise proving to be one of the best cherry-picks in this album. The song is so melodious and has sweet like experience for the ones who hear it. It somewhere slightly reminiscences of Uravugal Thodarkathai. Amrit has done a fabulous job with this track and his lyrical lines as well.

Ennodu

Singer: Mili Nair

Lyrics: Vivek

A mediocre could be the right term and the song when compared to rest of the numbers is quite middling and maybe, the visuals could add up some interesting elements. However, the singers have done a decent job.

Two Opposites – The Theme

The accordions emboss some good emotions laced with humour, where the egoistic appeal of a guy and gal in love is expressed.

The Return of Love – Theme

Quite in contrary to the previous theme music, this one is melodious and quite binding on emotional mood.

As on whole, the album of  ‘Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ is an amalgamation of beautiful melodies and at the same time is packaged with some trendy numbers as well.

Verdict: Appreciable debut by Amrit.

When Mirchi Shiva utters the best realism movie he has come across so far in Tamil cinema is Baasha and World Cinema is ‘Mirattal Adi’, it might evoke laughter across few groups, but the director actually tries to exhibit the actual taste and perception of cinema from a general public. Firstly, we would like to congratulate filmmaker Laxman Kumar for such an immense portrayal of reality. Masala Padam comes packaged with such moments that goes very well adhered to the contemporary situation of cinema.

When a producer of commercial film challenges a bunch of bloggers who incessantly keep criticizing the new releases online, they are asked to a write a script for commercial film. They take up the challenge and decide to follow three youngsters from different status of society – Mirchi Shiva from middle class, Bobby Simha – a goon in North Chennai and Gaurav, a filthy rich guy with no aspirations in life. To make the situations more interesting, they decide to make their friend (Lakshmi Devy) get acquainted to these people for grasping some intensive moments. But literally, things take a turn out that they didn’t expect.

While Mirchi Shiva comes up with his usual paradigm of amusing us with laughter, Bobby Simha delivers a neat and decorous performance. Especially Bobby’s emotional sequences with Lakshmi Devy are quite commendable. Less is what we see with Gaurav who gets to play something causual as a rich handsome guy. Others in the cast try to give some best spell including Venkat who plays a producer.

Technically analysing, the film has a graph of mediocre elements and it could have been better.

The first few minutes seems like a docu-drama presentation followed by some hilarious moments followed by the situations slightly getting into a different zone. The second half has some emotional contexts, but again the movie reminiscences of flicks like Jigarthanda and Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam.

Overall, Masala Padam is quite appreciable in few parts with the mix of hilarious and emotional events, but it would have nicer if writers had made it little crisp and made the narration more engaging.

We appreciate entire team for attempting something different and innovative, but with a narration with clear and crispness, the film would have been better.

Verdict: Interesting theme but with middling narration

It’s a mediocre start in the album, where the vocalism by Sathya Prakash is quite commendable, b but the tune is little middling. Nevertheless, as the time progresses and with the accordance to visuals, we might have betterment with the track.

Gana Gana

Vocals: Shreya Ghoshal and Anand Aravindakshan

Not really a great number when you hear for the first time, but  maybe after sometime if the makers have the promotional songs released or with the film’s release, it would surely have a great reception among the audiences. Shreya Ghoshal is a special surprise as she usually croons melodious numbers of Imman and for the first time attempts something different.

Mysterious Travel

Its theme music and it looks like although Imman is quite laudable with his background score, he hasn’t given theme music in album tracks for a very long time. Of course, it sounds good with some peppy style of composition and would be surely placed during the sequences of action and stunts.

Vaikom Vijayalakshmi – when you hear the name, her brand is closely synonymous with beautiful melodies. Be it Malayalam and Tamil, she has always rendered some melodious numbers and D Imman as he did with her in Romeo Juliet tries to bring some new dimension with retro-rap style, which is quite abnormal and artificial

10 Endradhukulla (Male Version)

Vocals: Vishal Dadlani and Emcee Jesz

Now comes the male version of 10 Endradhukulla song that is rendered by Vishal Dadlani and Emcee Jesz, which is somewhat good in style of accompanying rhythms and trendy beats.

Vroom Vroom

Vocals: Santosh Hariharan

As the album comes to an end, the song ‘Vroom Vroom’, which was released a single track occurs and it easily deletes the memories of so ordinary tracks we heard erstwhile. The song is appealing in all aspects and has already become a great hit.

As on whole, the song ‘Vroom Vroom’ becomes the absolute showstopper and rest of the tracks might find its way slowly to the groovy levels.

In an apparent bid to make critics think twice before pointing out flaws in the film, director Saravanan, who was a journalist earlier, has named his debut venture ‘Kathukutti’.

The film speaks about the woes faced by farmers (we saw Goundamani’s ’49 O’ with a similar theme only recently) and the attempts made by a wastrel to set things right.

The director, being a former journalist, has done home work to bring on screen the plight of those involved in agriculture. But he has missed out on coming out with a taut script and the packaging too lacks fizz.

Arivazhagan (Naren) is a carefree youngster and he is the son of a local politician. He spends all his time with his friend Ginger (Soori). Though he is dubbed as wastrel by many, Arivazhagan has ambitions for agriculture.

In the meantime, he also has an affair with Bhuvana (Srishti Dange). One day, he is fielded as candidate in a by-election by his father’s party, much against to the wishes of his dad. However, Arivazhagan accepts the challenge.

But he faces all hurdles in the form of Vasanth, another young and educated candidate. Vasanth is ready to go to any extent to defeat Arivazhagan and he even uses the death of Bhuvana’s father for the purpose.

The rest is all about whether Arivazhagan, the ‘kathukutty’  (novice) that he is, manages to break the evil designs of the opponent(s) and achieves his mission or not.

The first half is entertaining, but the second half is preachy. At many places, we are delivered with messages, with the main being the need to safeguard agriculture and to protect farmers.

Naren makes a comeback with this flick, but his dialogue delivery is not convincing. Soori tries to evoke laughter, while Srishti Dange fits well to the bill of a village belle. Others in the cast are okay.

The cinematography is colourful to the eyes, and the background score is good.  The director could have made the film much interesting with some smart writing and by infusing more pace to the screenplay. But still, ‘Kathukutti’ has its moments and a message too.
