Director: Vamsi Paidipally

Cast: Nagarjuna, Karthi, Tamannaah, Prakash Raj

With the name itself giving shivers down the spine, Thozha, the official remake of the French comedy-drama ‘The Intouchables’ was directed by Vamsi and he has perfectly adapted the movie to suit the Tamil nativity while perfectly retaining the soul of the flick. Karthi and Nagarjuna, the film’s leads have perfectly done justice to their roles and this movie can definitely be marked as a perfect sweep for the Paruthiveeran hero.

The film opens with a commonly seen scene where Seenu (Karthi), a petty thief comes out of jail on parole with the help of his lawyer friend (Vivek). Being disowned by his mother (Jayasudha) who works as a clerk in the railways he was in dire need of a job so that he could get out of jail permanently by portraying his good deeds. For him money is everything and that was the reason for his mother disowning him as she felt that he might spoil his siblings as well.
In the meantime Vikramadithya (Nagarjuna), a quadriplegic billionaire, who is paralysed below the neck was looking out for a caretaker and had dismissed a dozen interviews before being finally bowled over by Seenu. Seenu too accepts the job after initial reluctance seeing the stunning house and secretary of Vikramadhitya. He also has a charming secretary Keerthi (Tamannah) and a legal advisor (Prakash Raj) who takes care of him as a best friend. He tames the role of a person who hates people looking at him with sympathy and he has done justice to the role at every scene.

The rest of the story is about how the duo, over a period of time bond over and solve each other’s problems.

Everyone have done justice to their roles and the technical department plays a major role in making this film a pleasure to watch. Gopi Sundar’s background score goes well with the mood of the film, but the songs seem to be average.

P.S.Vinod’s cinematography is top notch and of international standards, especially during the vibrant Paris episode. Although Praveen’s editing is faultless, the movie is little lengthy and he could have trimmed certain portions.  All these vibrant features push it into the list of movies that should be watched at-least once.

Verdict: A perfect blend that should never be left unattended.

Especially with the number crooned by Thenisai Thendral Deva and Rokesh of ‘Aaluma Doluma’ fame penning the lyrics, the combination gives a clear impression of what it is all about. A fun loving song that has peppy beginning and later sounds like the first number in the movie, where we get to see the father-daughter having their blast of moments together. GV Prakash has interestingly roped in National award winner Uthara Unni Krishnan and GV Prakash adds up his vocalism too.

Chella Kutti

When Vijay is on the tracks, it could be the definite Chartbuster and so is Chella Kutti, which has a different genre of composing when compared to other tracks in the album. Neethi Mohan on her part does it all efficiently.

When filmmaker Manimaran made his debut directorial with ‘Udhayam NH 4’, we felt that the young filmmaker is here to offer something more special engaging for the audiences in terms of engagement through his narration, though the plot might be hackneyed. But what we get in his second outing ‘Pugazh’ is something more disappointing as there isn’t any such highlighting trait. In fact, his maiden debut had National award winner Vetrimaaran teaming up for screenplay, but here, his avatar as screenwriter has terribly failed.

The film revolves around a small town guy (Jai), who has been considered as the favourite of his neighbourhood. He and his friends spend most of their times together at the local playground, which they consider it to be the heart and soul in their lives for many sportsmen were created here. But sooner, the playground is almost occupied by an industrial corporate, where the local politician (Maarimuthu) tries to get the deal done. The film is about the confrontations that happen between the protagonist and this politician.

Although, the basic premise of this film is stereotypical and something that we have already seen in many movies, the screenplay could have been the better option, which would have scored brownie points. Regrettably, Manimaaran fails to present the film with such traits and the complete duration of 132 minutes turns out to be a much disappointing show. Jai has been consequently picking up some unique scripts, which has the potential to click, but somewhere fails up. Surabhi looks little flimsy in this film and her role is somewhat justifying in accordance to her decorous performance. Maarimuthu manages to score the best through his performance. RJ Balaji is little disappointing as we don’t get to see his full fledged comedy tracks.

On the technical aspects, the film lacks exceptional traits except the background score good in places.

Are you ready to watch a film that doesn’t let you strain much with logical thinking? Nothing to get your nerves tightened up with nitty-gritty action sequences or steamy sequences that would obviously stop parents bringing their kids alongside them? Then, Mappillai Singam is a film that you could watch along with your family for this weekend, without any hesitations. The film is directed by Rajashekar and is produced by Escape Artists Madan with Vimal, Anjali, Soori, Radharavi, Jayaprakash, Madhumilla, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan and many others in the cast.

Set against the southern Tamil Nadu village, the film is about clashes that has been happening over ages between two groups. Radharavi has been constantly winning the elections and has earned the wrath of opposite group headed by Munishkanth. Vimal plays the nephew of Radharavi and Anjali, a lawyer is the cousin girl of Munishkanth and daughter of Jayaprakash. The family feud gets more tougher, when Radharavi’s daughter Madhumilla and Anjali’s younger brother fall in love. As the families insist to separate the young lovers, but Vimal and Anjali decide to get them united and in the process fall for each other. Will the family feud stop them from getting united or not forms crux of the story.

Vimal has always been comfortable with the rural based entertainers and has managed to favour the audiences from this cohort unconditionally. Especially his combination with artistes like Anjali and Soori has been at the best through the commercial quotients. The onscreen chemistry between Vimal and Anjali isn’t much available as more importance is laid on humour. In this quotient, it is both Vimal and Soori, who offer decent course of humour along with artistes like Munishkanth, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan and Kaali Venkat.

The first half proceeds with a much lighter and lively moments, though there is no proper story. It keeps the audiences engaged with some humour and fun. Things slightly get slowed up by second half, but it works out well by the time of penultimate moments with a climax that is dramatized as in Sundar C movies.

On the technical front, the film has nothing much to be appreciated, but nor do they look like a constraint.

Overall, Mappillai Singam is a middling entertainer that you can enjoy, if you’re planning to spend some leisure time to be spent this weekend.

Verdict: Stereotypical but okay with some entertainment ingredients.

Instantly after the final credits, you distinctly grasp couple of blunt things about the movie and star-cast. First thing that comes to your minds would be the proficient ability of Nalan Kumarasamy to attempt something different from his previous movies. While most of the filmmakers confine themselves to a specific formulae or genre, Nalan has tried to move out of the comfort zone (Soodhu Kavvum was a heist comedy) and try something with ‘Romance’ in ‘Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum’. Secondly, the actors Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna Sebastian just throw up an awestruck factor with their impeccable performances. Especially, the girl who transfixed the audiences with her ‘Celine’ image from Premam easily eclipses that persona from the very beginning of this movie, breathing deeply into the role of Yazhini.

A Rom-Com Korean movie titled ‘My Dear Desperado’, which comes with a remake through the banners of Studio Green, Thirukumaran Entertainment and Abi & Abi Pictures features Nalan Kumarasamy as the director and Santhosh Narayanan as composer.

Madonna Sebastian plays a girl with bigger dreams – Yazhini, who has desired all her teenage to pursue a high profile job at IT Company. Facing hurdles from her parents, she somehow manages to land up in Chennai for a better job and becomes lucky enough to get one. Her paradisiacal life turns into turmoil after her company shuts down and her pursuit of new job keeps prolonging with luck not favoring her. Unable to meet the financial demands, she comes down to a much little house and over there comes across her neighbour (Vijay Sethupathi), who has served long jail sentence for the sake of his friend. The film traverses into the lives of these two people with contrastive natures and would the situations bring them together,

Nalan Kumarasamy has very well handled the screenplay. Although, the moments are seemingly slow, they gain its immense substantiality through the convincing performances of Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna Sebastian. On the other end, the hilarious moments have been very well crafted with limited dialogues, but with best expressions from the actors. The sequences like Vijay Sethupathi-Madonna boozing together and the final moments, where the protagonist tries to save Madonna from not missing the interview have been very well pictured. The climax portion is completely emotional and as the girl starts yearning whether she would be able to meet the man who made her life beautiful, audiences too are pushed into the same situation to ponder over it.

Musical score by Santhosh Narayanan is appealing with background score and the songs are merely seen as the background score, which is an additional strength to it. Cinematography is impressive and so is editing that goes with smooth impact.

Overall, Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum is a poignant drama of romance that celebrates the beauty of love in a much decorous panache. Maybe, the ones who expected ‘Mass’ avatar of Vijay Sethupathi could not be gratified, but the family audiences will surely love this film for its exquisite treatment.

Verdict: Idyllically impressive with emotions and poignance

More and more emotional drama that comes well blended with immense commercial ingredients that is completely balanced with impeccable performance… Dialogues are the most intriguing factors that keeps winning the applause and there is compelling ingredients that overall attracts the family audiences towards the movie. One of the most promising features that you would see in Vijay Antony movies is that he manages to gain our sympathy with more eminence. Be his maiden debut ‘Naan’ or ‘Salim’ or his hilarious entertainer ‘India Pakistan’, they’re completely made in such features.

Vijay Antony plays the role of a billionaire son and only heir to his widowed mother, who is the proprietor of 900Crore spinning mills and business. She hands over the business to him and on an unexpected turn is hit by an accident while the machines are spinning. Desolated into the state of coma, doctors give up on her in spite of heavy treatment.

During this juncture, he comes across a God man who insists him to take up a penance for next 48 days and will his mother come back to normalcy or everything succumbs to fate is something you need to watch over the screens.

Vijay Antony has been impeccably colossal in his performance and as cited above his emotional sequences are brilliantly delivered. He is best on his performance when it comes to action, comedy and sentimental scenes. Satna Titus is so much naturalistically portrayed in looks and her characterization is very well projecting as well. On the other hand, rest of the characterizations has done a remarkable job with the performance.

The running length of 130 minutes is very well narrated and is done with impactful screenplay, where there are no sluggish elements. The first half passes on like a flash and second one that studded with lots of emotions doesn’t slow down in pace. The dialogues as mentioned earlier have become the major strength to this film, where the applause keeps happening. The one involving the beggar speaking over FM station through phone to curb down poverty and Vijay Antony’s emotional punches about faith and beliefs are stunning. The last 20 minutes of the film becomes the major highlights in this film, where you keep yourselves moved to the edge of seats with lots of tension. We had witnessed a similar instance in movies like Superstar Rajnikanth’s Arunachalam and Prabhu Deva’s Alli Thandha Vaanam.

Overall, Pichaikkaran is a movie that is sure to become a great scorer in all centres as it holds a substantial package of entertainment with decency catering to the tastes of universal audiences.

Verdict: Emotional stunner with perfect package
