When the National film awards were presented in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, there was a notable absentee. And he is maestro Ilayaraja, who was picked for the honour for his background score in ‘Thaara Thappattai‘.

Multiple theories are doing rounds about Ilayaraja skipping the high profile event. While some say he is upset that he was selected for the honour only for the background score, others say he boycotted the function since his younger brother Gangai Amaran was one of the jury members.

Meanwhile, there are others who claim that the ‘Isaignani’ could not attend the awards ceremony due to some unavoidable reasons.

As soon as Ilayaraja was announced as the best music director for his background score in ‘Thaara Thappattai‘, a controversy was broke, pointing out that Gangai Amaran was part of the jury.

However, it later emerged that though Amaran was part of the selection committee, he stayed out of voting for Ilayaraja to avoid conflict of interst. Film editor Sanjib Datta, who too was a jury member, had confirmed this.
